On Monday, members of the Samuels team, along with $On Monday, members of the Samuels team, along with some of our valued customers, experienced firsthand the vital work being done to help the Chesapeake Bay, thanks to an excursion hosted by Tilghman Island Seafood and the Maryland Department of Agriculture. Our day began before dawn on Maryland’s Chester River, where we joined watermen as they hauled in some of their daily catch—1,500 lbs of Chesapeake Blue Catfish in just minutes. This impressive catch was only a fraction of what these hardworking watermen harvest each day. Later, we toured Tilghman Island Seafood’s facility, where we learned about their processing methods and oyster regeneration efforts, which are crucial to preserving the Bay’s delicate ecosystem. We ended the day with a delicious lunch in nearby St. Michaels, MD featuring smoked catfish products, local oysters, and a variety of Chesapeake Blue Catfish dishes. While the day was memorable and informative, our mission was clear: Chesapeake Blue Catfish, with their aggressive feeding habits, are threatening native species like blue crabs and striped bass, and, in turn, the livelihoods of those who rely on them. At Samuels, we are committed to helping address this issue with one simple mission: Eat more Blue Cat.
